Glin Bennet has in his time been both a psychiatrist and a surgeon. Through the combination of these distinct yet interlinked disciplines, he developed a holistic approach to illness, together with an interest in psychotherapy, and there were his ground-breaking studies in how people react to stress - in daily life and in extreme conditions. His studies were published in medical journals and later drawn together in his books - Patients and their Doctors: the Journey Through Medical Care, Beyond Endurance: Survival at the Extremes, and the award-winning The Wound and the Doctor: Healing, Technology and Power in Modern Medicine. More recently, he has been in demand as an expert witness in medico-legal work.

His latest work is a trilogy with the overall title of Father, Son and Father. It was originally intended to be a further study of doctors, based on his own experiences, but he soon found that to ground his own story he first needed to discover more about the reserved and distant man that his father was. This father had simple beginnings in Poyntzpass, County Armagh, served through the whole of the First World War as a chaplain, switched for some reason to medicine, and became a successful psychiatrist in London in the 1930s and a close friend of C G Jung. Delving then into his mother's background revealed tragedy in her own life, and so the story became much more personal.

The trilogy moves through the two world wars which provided a complex influence on Glin Bennet's childhood and early working life, and lead perhaps to his varied, and unorthodox career, which included contact with C G Jung and his family. There were successes and failures. The failures enabled him to look closely at professional and family life, and to the attendant joys, fulfilment and sorrows, and also to some unexpected parallels with what he had learned of his father’s past. In the 1960s Glin Bennet moved to Bristol, where he married and had four children, and now has three grandchildren as well.
